In their letter, they said Trump’s “recklessness, incompetence and unpopularity” risked turning the presidential election into a landslide for his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
They say the party should focus its resources on getting members of Congress re-elected. Many Republicans including former members of congress, have voiced exasperation with the provocative tone of his campaign.
Some Republicans have even deserted Trump over his verbal attacks.
In his latest remarks, Trump called Clinton and president Barack Obama the “co-founders” of the group calling itself Islamic State.
Clinton said the comments should disqualify him from the race.
According to polls, Trump has been falling in key battleground states in recent weeks.
